The Most Wonderful Time Of Year!
If you've reached adulthood in the 21st century, chances are you have lots of leftover costume pieces from Halloweens gone by. So these costumes are ones you can make using clothes you have already in your closet OR by piecing together leftover pieces from past years' costumes.
Make like Dr. Frankenstein and make something new from something old! Also, I don't know who this lady is above, but that's a pretty excellent costume idea too. Frankenstein's Monster's GF?
Speaking of, have you guys seen the show Heroes of Cosplay? It's about people who make these incredibly intricate outfits to compete in contests at conventions. Cosplay and Halloween costumes are VERY DIFFERENT THINGS (chillax, cosplayers) but both are forms of costuming and in all cases, you'll stand out more with a more unique costume. Like on the show, they don't show up as Disney's Cinderella or Slave Girl Leia; they're coming in as Rocket Man as a pin-up girl or Taffyta from Wreck-It Ralph or a steampunk Star Wars storm trooper.
Even if you aren't a professional (or even an amateur) cosplayer, I always find it more fun to show up with a costume nobody else is wearing. So with that in mind, here are some fresh ideas for you:
You've already gone as: the Paper Bag Princess, Alice in Wonderland, Pippi Longstocking
This year try: Madeline!
You don't need to completely duplicate this ensemble, just go for a French schoolgirl vibe. Attach a sailor collar to any A-line mini (ideally a blue one, but whatevs), put on white knee-highs, black t-strap shoes, and a straw hat. Go the extra mile by drawing on an appendectomy scar. Turn it into a couples' costume by showing up with someone in a nun's habit as Miss Clavel!
SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT!!
You've already gone as: Jem (or whichever Hologram or Misfit you look most like), Miss Frizzle from The Magic School Bus, a Ninja Turtle, Rainbow Brite, etc., etc.
This year try: dressing like a real grown-up, and pick one of the ladies from Clue: The Movie!
Miss Peacock is a good costume to re-use a feathered fascinator
AND a fur stole AND some ferosh cat-eye glasses
Your old flapper wig, red nails and a LBD are all you need for a Miss White costume. Apart from memorizing her famous speech, which is maybe even more important than the outfit.
You've already gone as: Marilyn Monroe, Clara Bow (or any other flapper), Judy Garland, Lucille Ball
This year try: Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction (black bob wig, white button-down, black pants, black blazer; optional syringe sticking out of your cleavage)
Bonus: if you went as a flapper recently, you can re-use your same wig!
I'm pretty sure I'm going to go as Madeline, personally, but that's mainly because I'm still fully obsessed with France. And I have red hair :-)
Have you guys figured out Halloween costumes yet??
