Jour 8: Elvis' birthday link luuurve

- weheartit.com

Everybody looks at their best in a cozy sweater, I think.
Especially if they're already extremely good-looking.

So, like all kids, I was obsessed with Elvis Presley and the 1950s from the time I was about 8 until... recently. OK, I'm still kind of an Elvis superfan. Strictly his younger days (pre-1968 comeback special, pre-sideburns, pre-TCB).

About 10 years ago, I fulfilled a life dream and got to go visit Graceland. Observations:

- it's really not as big as you'd think. I guess this was a mansion in the 1970s, but now it's kind of like... a big-ish normal house.
- the jungle room is epic
- despite the presence of Elvis superfans, the staff are hilariously bored Memphis teenagers. Working at Graceland is to them as working at the grocery store is to teens in any other city = boring job, filled with annoying customers.

*Note: I'm not hating here. Going to Graceland was a highlight of my life so far.
It's just... not quite Scrooge McDuck's mansion, in terms of scale and opulence.

Anyway, today Elvis Aron Presley (yes, there's just one "a" in his middle name - which launched a zillion conspiracy theories BECAUSE HIS GRAVESTONE HAS TWO "A"s in AARON WHICH MEANS HE'S NOT REALLY DEAD, RIGHT??) would have been 77 years old. I don't think there's anything remotely frugal about him, or his lifestyle - quite the opposite. He's like the posterchild for consumption (of grilled peanut butter and banana sandwiches, numerous prescription drugs, multiple TVs, guns, etc.) and I still luuurve him regardless.

These links have nothing to do with Elvis, but here's a fun video to listen to as you peruse:

Link luurve!!

The Reluctant Retiree has figured out The Secret to Boxing Week shopping... something only retirees knew about UNTIL NOW!  (Vague Elvis connection: if Elvis was still around, he'd be retired now [probably])

Serendipity, from Serendipity's Guide to Savings, is taking part in No-Spend January. I'm also trying to, but it sounds like she's got a much better plan than me. (Vague Elvis connection: I don't think Elvis ever had a no-spend month after he got famous. He grew up poor, though, so I bet he had lots of involuntary no-spend times in his youth)

Gail Vaz-Oxlade wrote this great blog to help you figure out of you're living beyond your means (Vague Elvis connection: As far as I know, Elvis was living within his means. He had a lot of means to live within, though.)

The Beauty Department posted this guide to makeup, offering their picks for the best makeup splurges and steals. (Vague Elvis connection: his ex-wife, Priscilla, has always worn lots of makeup.)

When Live Gives You Lemons (Add Vodka) has some good tips to go green to save money - one of the most important things to me, too. Buying crappy cheap stuff may save money in the short term, but sometimes minimalism and re-using stuff can save you even more money! (Vague Elvis connection: I don't think he was ever known for his green lifestyle, though, to be fair, I don't think recycling was invented during his lifetime)

And do you watch Downton Abbey, THE BEST SHOW ON TV EVER? EVER!!!! This show has it all- brooding, smoldering gazes; amazing dresses and sets; completely over-the-top-drama; and Dame Maggie Smith. Season 2 starts tonight, so check this hilarious primer of Season 1 to get caught up. (Vague Elvis connection: n/a)
