Day 117: Hidden treasures and budget jars

Two things to tell you about today.

First, remember how I got a new, better-paying job? I switch there next week, and so today I was going through the things in my desk. Three years' worth of miscellany and it turns out I own lots of stuff I forgot about! I found two pairs of sunglasses! A full pack of gum!

Free sunglasses I forgot I had! TWO PAIRS!!

It's a lot like moving apartments. There's all this stuff that I forgot I put it there, and now it's like I got free stuff! Part of a ball of yarn! An empty Ziploc bag! These are all like free frugal gifts.

And second, my GV-O jars. I used her online budget-making tool, in combination with some examination of my spending over the past month to work out My Very First Budget.

I don't have enough jars for all of the bits and pieces, but they are:

Savings/emergency fund
Debt repayment
Living expenses

*note: I don't actually have money in each jar. Just a piece of paper indicating the budget amount. I am too suspicious to keep that amount of cash money in my apartment. Plus, I get free points from using my debit card.

Don't look at me like that, Gail! I AM NOT A "PRINCESS"!!

ANYWAY, if I stick within the money alloted, I will still have about $400 leftover at the end of the month. Which is maybe not how Mama Gail really means for the jars to be used, but it's a cushion because I'm not delusional. I know that I won't be able to stay within my budget for all of these things.

Wish me luck!

You may be able to stay under budget, never really know! ;) I've cut out all discretionary spending (ok, most... :P) in order to save $$ to beef up our savings accounts!

Gail rules! My life has changed so much since she entered it!

The whole point is to stay on it - save your receipts and at the end of the month you can see how realistic it was and adjust. Good for you and good luck.
